The Project

We partnered with NeckCare to develop their new digital platform, designed to help individuals improve neck movement and control through specialized tests and exercises. The platform supports a diverse range of users, including those recovering from head injuries and whiplash, individuals with neck pain, athletes, and many others. Our primary focus was implementing several crucial tests within the platform. We took part in implementing the renowned Butterfly test, which assesses head movement along a predetermined path; the Range of Motion test, measuring neck mobility in various planes; and the Joint Position Error test, evaluating the accuracy of returning to a neutral neck position. We also integrated assessments to track user symptoms. We worked on functionality to generate comprehensive, easy-to-interpret reports and charts after each test. These visual aids enable clinicians to monitor patient progress over time effectively. We worked on features allowing healthcare providers to securely share these reports online, replay tests as they were performed, and download PDF versions of the reports. Additionally, we worked on an exercise section to help patients improve their test results. This integrated system makes it easier for both healthcare providers and patients to work together during treatment and recovery.

Challenges

Working on the examinations was a complex task, as they needed to align precisely with NeckCare's research and regulatory framework. It's worth noting that NeckCare's systems are built on two decades of scientific research. This same level of precision was required for the reports and analytics, ensuring accurate calculations and proper data visualization. Our work involved integrating a physical sensor, which presented its own set of challenges. One significant issue we encountered was sensor drift, which we successfully addressed by refining the calibration process. To streamline development, we implemented a mocking technique that allowed us to work without constantly connecting to the physical sensor. This approach enabled us to rapidly prototype and develop tests using simulated sensor data. We also designed the process of creating new mock data to be straightforward. Additionally, we developed a populate feature that could quickly generate multiple simulated examinations, allowing us to more effectively test reports and other functionalities.

Final Words

The project proved to be a success. All of NeckCare's customers have transitioned to the new platform and are benefiting from its enhanced features and improved user experience. While NeckCare boasts an impressive clientele in the industry which would be fun to mention, we'll respect their privacy by not disclosing specific details here. We feel incredibly grateful to have been part of a project that makes such a tangible difference in people's lives. It's been particularly rewarding to hear how much patients appreciate the solution, with many reporting that it has significantly improved their rehabilitation journey. Throughout the project, NeckCare proved to be an excellent partner. We developed strong professional relationships with their team, and many of us formed genuine friendships. As a testament to the collaborative nature of our work and the value we brought to the project, our names were added to one of NeckCare's patents, which is truly an honor. Given the positive collaboration and outcomes, we look forward to potential opportunities to work with these talented individuals again, whether directly through NeckCare or in other professional contexts.
